The Humane Society of Mohave County, is a 501c3 organization that was started in 2016. We are a limited admission, adoption guarantee shelter, that is foster based.  Our shelter intakes animals from the public, local animal control agencies, and rescue organizations.  Our shelter has a mission of helping all animals regardless of age and health status.  We take in many animals with special needs or those who need medical treatment in order to become adoptable.   All of our shelter animals are housed in foster homes or at our clinic partner, Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Animals are either transferred to low intake area rescue organizations through our network partners in AZ, NV, and CA or adopted via our clinic and Petsmart in the Kingman area.

All animals upon intake receive an exam by a veterinarian at our partner clinic.  At this time they are treated for any health issues, vaccinated, dewormed, spay/neutered, microchipped, and in the case of felines, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).  For senior pet adoptions, most animals placed for adoption have basic blood work, x-rays, and dental cleanings performed to prolong their health and to allow adopters peace of mind when adopting a senior pet.

Vaccinations for canine adoptions include:

  • Rabies (if 3 months or older at time of adoption)

  • DA2PP vaccination  - may need additional boosters after adoption if under 6 months

  • Bordetella - Kennel Cough Vaccines

  • Deworming

  • Flea and Tick Preventative

Vaccinations for feline adoptions include:

  • Negative SNAP test - Feline leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

  • Feline Leukemia Vaccine - may need additional booster after adoption

  • Rabies (if 3 months or older at time of adoption)

  • FVRCP - Feline upper respiratory and panleukopenia vaccine - may need additional boosters after adoption if under 6 months

  • Deworming

  • Flea and Tick Preventative

We take great pride in the animals we put up for adoption and make sure that they are healthy, well socialized, and have a seamless transition into a new adopters home.  Another great aspect of our foster based organization is that we are able to witness how they behave in the home. Most of our pets come with biographies that let a potential adopter know if the pet is good with kids, other pets, and has any behavior issues or sensitivities.  We have a great relationship with Mutt Manners, a behaviorist, and many of our volunteers are dedicated pet owners that work with animals in the home to make them adoptable as possible, and start the process of potty training and basic obedience in the home if not adopted right away.

All our pets when adopted receive:

  • Microchip that is to be registered online for free - 24 Petwatch

  • 1 month of free pet health insurance. * owner must register microchip to activate insurance

  • Certificate for free health exam with local vet

  • Petsmart new pet care package

Any animals that are currently recovering from a procedure or on medications are given instructions and follow up visits regarding these issues are free of charge at Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic.

What makes us unique?

Our shelter has a unique mission in that we not only help animals of all ages and health statuses, but we also understand without educating the public and stopping the cycle of unwanted litters we are only continuing the cycle. That is why, when we intake litters of animals from the public, one requirement is that the owner allows us to spay the mother of the litter. We do this at no charge and try to provide discounted services for other pets in the home that may not be sterilized. By making this part of our mission, we stop the cycle and allow for the owner to have no more unwanted litters that would be relinquished to local shelters.

Another common reason owners relinquish their pets to shelters is due to medical costs and unforeseen illness that they cannot afford. By partnering with Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic we are able to offer subsidized medical care for these owners and try to keep these animals in their home instead of being relinquished for sometimes easily fixable problems.

Some animals that are relinquished to shelters have severe health emergencies such as orthopedic issues, broken limbs, bladder stones, ringworm, parvovirus, wounds, etc.  Our partner clinic is a fully equipped medical facility that has 24 hr access to veterinarians when animals are in need. Many times our shelter is there for animal control facilities in times of need and we take in animals that would have been otherwise euthanized for these conditions.  We are able to provide them with unlimited care, foster them through recovery, and adopt them to a loving home once again. We also try to help by intaking large amounts of animals or providing housing during natural disasters such as flood or fire, relieve local animal control agencies during hoarding cases, and help the public in times of family emergencies.

How can you help?

In order to continue to provide this much needed care for our community, we rely on donations from people like you and public grant organizations.  We work very closely with Petsmart Charities and they sponsor many adoption events and provide some subsidies.  The doctors and staff at Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic donate much of their time and expertise treating animals that need medical attention despite what funds are available.  We do not receive any type of government funding and donations from the public are essential to our daily efforts.
